This update is aimed at tackling the increasing issue of spam messages, providing users with more control over their messaging experience. Spam messages on platforms like WhatsApp have been a persistent problem, bombarding users with unwanted messages, including promotional offers and scams. With this new feature, WhatsApp aims to improve user privacy, enhance security, and create a smoother messaging experience.

The feature allows WhatsApp users to identify and block spam messages without unlocking their devices or navigating through the app. When a spam message notification appears on the lock screen, users can long-press on the notification to access various options, including the ability to block the sender instantly. WhatsApp also prompts users to report the contact.

Additionally, WhatsApp already displays a cautionary note below the contact details of any unknown number that sends you a message. This includes options to add the contact, block it, or report and block it. Apart from these direct options, users can proactively block a contact. In the “More Options” section on the Home page, go to Settings > Privacy > Blocked contacts > Add > Search or select the contact you want to block.

To use WhatsApp, users need to register their phone numbers. However, sharing phone numbers has raised privacy concerns. The company is reportedly working on a solution to allow connections on the platform without the need for phone number exchange.

In the near future, WhatsApp will also support cross-platform messaging, enabling users from different messaging platforms to text those on WhatsApp. A “Third Party Chats” section will be available on the application’s home interface, displaying messages received from users on other platforms while keeping them separate from in-app chats protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
