Gas Cylinders Explode in Kenyan Capital: Late on Thursday, a gas explosion caused a massive fire in Kenya’s capital while people were sleeping. Authorities reported that at least three people lost their lives, and 298 others were injured.
There was a fire caused by a gas explosion reported in the Mradi area of Nairobi’s Embakasi neighborhood at 11:30 p.m. local time. The injured were moved to different hospitals across the city, as mentioned in a statement from the Kenya Police Service.

Emergency Plus Medical Services, a private ambulance service owned by the Kenya Red Cross Society, reported that dozens of others got medical treatment on the site. The fire, which burned homes and warehouses, has now been controlled, and the police have secured the scene.

On Friday, the Kenya Red Cross stated that their staff is at the site, offering first aid and emotional support to those affected. The organization has also established a “tracing desk” and is helping in search and rescue operations. According to the Kenya Red Cross, 21 children who were separated from their families after the explosion have been reunited with their parents.
Meanwhile, Nairobi City County has decided not to charge the victims for their hospital bills. They have also started giving necessary food and other items to the families affected, as mentioned in a statement from Kenyan government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.

The explosion seems to have happened at a place where they were dealing with gas illegally. Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) stated that they had said no to requests for permits to build a storage and filling plant for gas at that location in 2023.
The primary reason for rejecting the applications was that the designs did not follow the safety distances required by the Kenya Standard, stated the agency in a statement on Friday.
EPRA noted the high population density around the proposed site and the applicant was requested to submit a Qualitative Risk Assessment clearly indicating the radiation blast profiles in the unfortunate case of an explosion like the one that happened yesterday.”
The applicant never provided the requested QRA resulting in the rejection of the applications,” EPRA added. “Email correspondences providing reasons for the rejection were sent to the applicant.”
EPRA mentioned that they are taking steps to make sure that licenses for plants with lower safety standards are canceled. They also plan to demolish illegal plants operating throughout the country.
