This win propels Trump towards the nomination and a potential rematch with Joe Biden in November.

As per Future Path of Nikki Haley After Home State Primary Loss to Donald Trump. Trump’s success in the first four major nominating contests establishes a formidable lead as the “Super Tuesday” 15-state voting approaches. Despite Haley’s determination to continue, Trump, focused on the broader election, didn’t mention her in his victory speech, directing his criticism towards Biden.

Future Path of Nikki Haley After Home State Primary Loss to Donald Trump

“We’re going to be up here on November 5 and we’re going to look at Joe Biden — we’re going to look him right in the eye, he’s destroying our country — and we’re going to say, Joe, you’re fired. Get out,” Trump said to cheers at his victory party in state capital Columbia.

“This quick call is a bad result for former governor Haley in her home state. The quickness of the call will likely lead to additional pressure for her to drop out of the race,” he told AFP.

Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and the only woman in the Republican contest, aimed to surpass expectations in her home state but struggled against Trump’s right-wing populism. Trump’s previous victories and the likelihood of party unity ahead of his March 25 criminal trial pose challenges for Haley’s continued campaign.

‘Chaos’

Trump’s aides aim to eliminate Haley before the Republican National Convention, anticipating party consolidation around the front-runner. Haley, a traditional conservative, warned of a scandal-ridden Trump presidency. She criticized Trump’s comments to Black conservatives, calling them “disgusting,” and highlighted concerns about his response to global issues.

Despite arguing for her electability against Biden, Haley’s message may not have resonated widely. While she plans to persist through Super Tuesday, analysts suggest she could be positioning herself for a potential 2028 run or as a replacement if Trump faces legal or health challenges.

“Nikki Haley’s an incredible role model,” said one Republican voter, Julie Taylor. “She’s not giving up, she’s showing strength and grace and courage.”

Initially expected to be a swift operation, it turned into a prolonged conflict, causing devastation and human suffering.

As the world acknowledges this solemn anniversary, the European Union has imposed its 13th package of sanctions, intensifying Russia’s isolation. David Cameron was anticipated to speak at an evening meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba.

Europe Grapples with Tough Questions

As the world observes the invasion’s second anniversary today, Europe faces challenging questions about the war and its future. The most pressing: how long can it sustain the draining financial and military support for Ukraine? Whispers of fatigue are growing, especially as the war shows no immediate resolution, and unity within the European Union and NATO encounters challenges.

EU Grapples Sanctions Escalate Costs Mount: Here are the 10 key points

  • On February 24, 2022, Russian forces, under the order of President Vladimir Putin, initiated a multi-pronged attack on Ukraine, targeting major cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odessa.
  • Ukrainian troops and a galvanized citizenry fiercely resisted, leading to intense fighting, particularly around major population centers.
  • The second-anniversary clashes coincide with heightened tensions as the US announces its most substantial package of sanctions against Moscow, aiming to cripple Russia’s war effort.
  • The EU has implemented its 13th package of sanctions, further isolating Russia. In response, Moscow has imposed counter-sanctions on EU officials.
  • Sanctions and export controls are in place to hinder Russia, “making it harder for them to fight their war of choice,” said Deputy US Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo.

Geopolitical and Economic Impact

The war has significantly damaged Ukraine’s economy, witnessing a decrease of approximately 30-35% of GDP in the first year alone. Neighboring economies are also affected, with increased defense spending and inflationary pressures, according to the Economics Observatory.

European energy companies face challenges in finding alternative suppliers to replace Russian imports, leading to higher transportation costs, as per S&P Global data.

He emphasized that the coalition, comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia, is not a fleeting alliance but one that is committed to growing and contributing to global prosperity. Jaishankar, addressing a think-tank forum, likened the Quad to an “overhead light,” describing it as a creative, flexible, nimble, responsive, and open-minded initiative.

The Quad’s primary focus has been on strengthening cooperation to ensure a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific in response to China’s growing assertiveness in the region. Jaishankar highlighted that the Quad represents the emergence of a multipolar global order and operates on collaborative principles rather than unilateral actions.

Jaishankar also said that the Quad has five messages, “One — it reflects the growth of a multipolar order; two — it is post-alliance and post-Cold War thinking; three — it is against spheres of influence; four — it expresses the democratising of the global space and a collaborative, not unilateral approach and five — it is a statement that in this day and age, others cannot have a veto on our choices,” he said.

He noted that the Quad has been facilitated by the evolving Indo-Pacific and emphasized the need for more collaboration in the changing global order. Asserting its longevity and growth, Jaishankar called for making the Quad more contemporary, relevant, and impactful.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, joining virtually, stated that the Quad advocates for a region free from intimidation and coercion, where competition is managed responsibly and disputes are settled based on international law. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, in a brief video message, stressed the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and open international order.

“For this reason, Japan with its allies and like-minded countries is working to further develop a free and open indo-Pacific based on the rule of law,” she said.

US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, speaking on behalf of Secretary of State Antony Blinken, highlighted the Quad’s strength in harnessing the capabilities and resources of the four nations to deliver concrete outcomes for the benefit of all in the dynamic Indo-Pacific.

“I want to emphasise the defining feature of our partnership — the Quad stands for an affirmative vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific in which we collectively build the capacity of our allies and partners,” he said.

Jaishankar further emphasized the centrality of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) in the Indo-Pacific, leaving no room for doubt on its significance.

“I think anybody who doubts Asian centrality when they look at a map of the Indo Pacific clearly missed their geography classes in school,” he said.

Prince William Calls for End to Gaza Conflict Due to High Casualties

Although it’s uncommon for members of the royal family to make political statements, the 41-year-old heir to the throne is set to engage in various activities on Tuesday to acknowledge the human suffering caused by the conflict in the Middle East.

“I remain deeply concerned about the terrible human cost of the conflict in the Middle East since the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October. Too many have been killed,”

William said.

“I, like so many others, want to see an end to the fighting as soon as possible. There is a desperate need for increased humanitarian support to Gaza. It’s critical that aid gets in and the hostages are released.”

In addition to calling for an end to the fighting, Prince William’s office has mentioned his intention to highlight the increasing global issue of antisemitism.

Prince Charles, who made an official visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territories in 2018, is scheduled to attend a synagogue next week. There, he will listen to young people actively involved in combating hatred and antisemitism as part of his engagement schedule.

The conflict in Gaza began in October last year when Hamas fighters entered southern Israel, resulting in the death of 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the seizure of 253 hostages. King Charles, William’s father, referred to these actions as “barbaric acts of terrorism.”

Since then, the Israeli military response has led to the loss of over 29,000 Palestinian lives, as reported by Palestinian health authorities.

Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has urged the European Union (EU) not to acknowledge the outcomes of the upcoming March Russian presidential election. This appeal was revealed through a transcript provided by a spokeswoman.

Do Not Acknowledge Russian Presidential Election: Yulia Navalnaya

“Do not recognise these elections,” Navalnaya told the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council on Monday, according to the transcript.

“A president who assassinated his main political opponent cannot be legitimate by definition,”

Navalnaya said in the speech.

The Kremlin, denying any connection to Navalny’s demise, rejects Western allegations holding President Vladimir Putin accountable for the incident, deeming them unacceptable. Putin has cautioned that any attempt by foreign powers to interfere in Russia’s election will face a robust response.

Republican Call to Deactivate Biden’s TikTok Raises Security Concerns https://thenewsay.com/republican-lawmakers-urge-biden-to-deactivate-tiktok/ https://thenewsay.com/republican-lawmakers-urge-biden-to-deactivate-tiktok/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2024 17:15:44 +0000 https://thenewsay.com/?p=5018 Republican lawmakers urge Biden to deactivate TikTok: A group of 18 Republican lawmakers has asked President Joe Biden to deactivate his campaign’s TikTok account, expressing national security worries.

In a letter obtained by Reuters, the lawmakers claim Biden is overlooking TikTok’s well-known national security risks. They question how the federal government can caution Americans about the app’s dangers when the Commander in Chief utilizes it.

Republican Lawmakers Urge Biden to Deactivate TikTok

Biden’s campaign recently joined TikTok on Feb 11, aiming to connect with younger voters. The campaign’s first video has gained 9.6 million views, and it has around 162,000 followers.

Senators Marco Rubio, Jerry Moran, John Barrasso, Marsha Blackburn, Rick Scott, and Josh Hawley are among the lawmakers urging Biden to “delete your account and publicly acknowledge the national security threat posed by TikTok.”

As of Monday, the White House, TikTok, and the Biden campaign have not responded to requests for comments on the letter.

Last week, Democratic Senator Mark Warner raised concerns about TikTok’s national security implications and the Biden campaign’s decision to join. He mentioned India’s ban on TikTok, expressing concern about a mixed message.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley reiterated her call to ban TikTok, calling it incredibly dangerous during a Fox News event on Sunday.

Congressional efforts to ban TikTok or impose new restrictions have stalled. Some lawmakers advocate placing China-based TikTok parent ByteDance on an export control list through the Commerce Department.

TikTok reported to Congress last month that 170 million Americans use the app, up from 150 million a year earlier.

The White House highlighted last week that a ban on TikTok’s use on government devices, approved by Congress in 2022 and signed by Biden, remains in effect.

In March 2023, the US Treasury-led Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) demanded TikTok’s Chinese owners sell their shares or face a potential ban. However, the administration has not taken any action on this so far.

Russia Takes Control of Avdiivka, Biggest Victory in 9 Months https://thenewsay.com/russia-takes-control-of-avdiivka-biggest-victory/ https://thenewsay.com/russia-takes-control-of-avdiivka-biggest-victory/#respond Sun, 18 Feb 2024 17:11:05 +0000 https://thenewsay.com/?p=4985 Russia Takes Control of Avdiivka Biggest Victory in 9 Months: Moscow/Kyiv: Russia announced on Sunday that it now fully controls the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, marking its most significant gain in nine months. Although Ukraine withdrew, Russia mentioned some Ukrainian troops remain in a large Soviet-era coke plant after a fierce battle.

Russia Takes Control of Avdiivka Biggest Victory in 9 Months

The fall of Avdiivka is Russia’s most substantial advancement since seizing the city of Bakhmut in May 2023, almost two years after President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale war by invading Ukraine.

Russia’s defense ministry reported an 8.6 km (5.3 miles) advancement on the 1,000 km (620-mile) front line, with Russian troops pushing forward after a deadly urban battle, leaving the town nearly deserted.

Ukraine stated it withdrew its soldiers to prevent them from being completely surrounded after months of intense fighting. Putin applauded the fall of Avdiivka as a significant victory and praised Russian troops.

Following Ukraine’s unsuccessful attempt to breach Russian lines last year, Moscow aimed to wear down Ukrainian forces as Kyiv considers a major mobilization, and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy appoints a new war commander.

“The head of state congratulated Russian soldiers on this success, an important victory,” stated the Kremlin on its website.

Russia mentioned some Ukrainian forces still occupy the Soviet-era coke plant, crucial for Russia’s goal of securing full control of the industrial Donbas region. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov stated, “Measures are being taken to completely clear the town of militants and to block Ukrainian units that have left the town and are entrenched at the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant.”

Also Read: Russia Takes Control of Avdiivka Biggest Victory in 9 Months

There has been no public comment from Ukrainian authorities on this. Russian state television showed Ukrainian flags being replaced with Russian flags in Avdiivka.

Russia portrayed the Ukrainian withdrawal as hurried and chaotic, claiming soldiers and weapons were left behind. The Ukrainian military acknowledged casualties but stated the situation stabilized somewhat after the retreat.

U.S. President Joe Biden had warned about Avdiivka falling due to ammunition shortages following months of Republican opposition to a new U.S. military aid package for Kyiv.

Zelenskiy, at a global security conference in Munich, urged allies to address the “artificial” weapon shortage and emphasized the importance of stalled U.S. aid. He praised Ukrainian troops for exhausting Russian forces in Avdiivka and suggested the withdrawal resulted from a lack of weapons.

Also Read: Russia Takes Control of Avdiivka Biggest Victory in 9 Months

Capturing Avdiivka boosts Russia’s morale ahead of Putin’s re-election bid next month and is a step towards securing Moscow’s hold on Donetsk, about 20 km (12 miles) to the east.

Putin congratulated the Russian commander in charge of the assault on Avdiivka, Colonel-General Andrei Mordvichev. Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov stressed the need for modern air defense systems and artillery shells.

Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who took command last week, said Ukrainian forces moved to more secure positions to avoid encirclement. Ukrainian forces also repelled a Russian offensive on the southern front in the Zaporizhzhia area.

UK Enters Recession as Spending Declines https://thenewsay.com/uk-enters-recession-as-spending-declines/ https://thenewsay.com/uk-enters-recession-as-spending-declines/#respond Sat, 17 Feb 2024 12:46:27 +0000 https://thenewsay.com/?p=4976 UK Enters Recession as Spending Declines: Official figures reveal that a decline in spending, doctors’ strikes, and reduced school attendance led the UK into a recession at the end of the last year.

Between October and December, the economy contracted by 0.3%, a larger decline than anticipated, following a previous contraction from July to September. A recession occurs when the economy doesn’t grow for two consecutive quarters. The UK Enters Recession as Spending Declines in details below.

UK Enters Recession as Spending Declines: United Kingdom

Questions arise regarding Rishi Sunak’s commitment made in January to boost the economy. The government has not specified the measure to assess meeting the Prime Minister’s pledge publicly.

Despite private briefings suggesting growth between October and December compared to the previous three months, Mr. Sunak’s promise remains unfulfilled due to a 0.1% shrinkage in July to September.

As per UK Enters Recession as Spending Declines, In 2023, the UK economy grew by 0.1%, the weakest annual growth figure since 2009, excluding the Covid years.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves criticized the latest figures, stating that Mr. Sunak’s economic growth pledge is “in tatters.”

The UK’s economic challenges are not unique, with the European Union narrowly avoiding recession in the second half of 2023, and Japan confirming its second consecutive quarter of economic contraction.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) identified several areas where the economy struggled. December saw reduced spending after Black Friday sales in November, while the health sector was impacted by junior doctors’ strikes, and school attendance dropped by 1%.

Gross domestic product (GDP), a key measure of economic activity, influences government decisions on public services funding. Growing GDP signals effective economic management, while a decline can lead to criticism of government policies.

As per the UK Enters Recession as Spending Declines, In response to deteriorating public finances, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is reportedly considering a larger squeeze on public spending for potential tax cuts in the upcoming Budget on 6 March.

While commenting on Mr. Sunak’s economic growth pledge, Mr. Hunt emphasized the priority of tackling inflation, noting the economy’s resilience and positive indicators such as low unemployment and rising real wages.

Recent figures show a slowdown in wage growth but outpacing price rises, and inflation, though lower than expected in January, remains double the Bank of England’s 2% target.
