Berlinale Urges Release of Iranian Directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha https://thenewsay.com/berlinale-appeals-for-iranian-2024/ https://thenewsay.com/berlinale-appeals-for-iranian-2024/#respond Sun, 04 Feb 2024 10:52:00 +0000 https://smartmag.theme-sphere.com/smart-times/oil-rises-as-investors-look-past-possible-reserve-releases/ Berlinale Appeals for Iranian 2024: At the 74th Berlin Film Festival, “My Favourite Cake” by Iranian directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha is creating a lot of buzz.

Despite being banned from travel by Iranian authorities and facing a trial related to their new film, the directors hope their movie will compete for the Golden Bear.

Berlinale Appeals for Iranian 2024: Europe News

The trouble began when they found out about the travel ban at Tehran airport in September 2023. Iranian authorities confiscated their passports as they were about to catch a flight to Paris for the post-production work on “My Favourite Cake.”

As Berlinale Appeals for Iranian 2024, In December, Iranian security forces raided the film editor’s house, seizing materials related to the production. The film’s plot, revolving around a 70-year-old woman breaking her solitary routine for romance, seems to have irked the hard-line Islamist authorities.

The Berlin Film Festival’s decision to include this film in the competition is significant, considering the festival’s reputation for taking political stances and providing a platform for voices facing oppression.

As per the Berlinale Appeals for Iranian 2024, In a statement titled “Call for Freedom Of Movement, Freedom Of Expression for Competition Directors Maryam Moghaddam and Behtash Sanaeeha,” the Berlinale expressed shock and dismay over the travel restrictions imposed on the filmmakers.

The festival urged Iranian authorities to return the passports and lift all restrictions, emphasizing its commitment to freedom of speech, expression, and the arts worldwide. Berlinale heads Carlo Chatrian and Mariëtte Rissenbeek called for the filmmakers to be allowed to present their film at the festival.

This isn’t the first time Moghaddam and Sanaeeha have faced challenges. Their previous film, “Ballad of a White Cow,” presented at the 2021 Berlinale, garnered critical acclaim but led to a lawsuit by the Revolutionary Guards. Although they were acquitted, the film remains banned in Iran.

The Berlin Film Festival, known for its political stance, is scheduled from February 15 to 25.

Iran states that U.S. strikes are a ‘strategic mistake’ https://thenewsay.com/iran-us-strikes-strategic-mistake/ https://thenewsay.com/iran-us-strikes-strategic-mistake/#respond Sun, 04 Feb 2024 10:41:52 +0000 https://smartmag.theme-sphere.com/smart-times/post-format-audio/ Iran-US strikes strategic mistake: Iran criticized the US for conducting airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, calling it a “strategic mistake” after hitting 85 targets in response to a drone attack on a US military base. The White House blamed an Iran-backed militia group for the drone attack.

The strikes resulted in at least 16 deaths, including civilians, according to Iraqi officials, who called them a violation of sovereignty with disastrous consequences. Syria also protested the “occupation” of its territory. Iran’s foreign ministry stated that the strikes would only escalate tensions.

Iran-US Strikes Strategic Mistake: World News

The US military targeted Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militias in Iraq and Syria, hitting seven locations with over 85 targets. President Biden affirmed that such attacks would continue but emphasized not seeking conflict.

Since the US strikes, there has been one attack on American forces, but no injuries were reported. The US retaliation followed a drone attack on a US base near Jordan’s border with Syria, attributed to the Iranian-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq. Iran denies involvement, while Russia calls for a UN Security Council meeting, expressing concern over peace and safety threats.

Initially scheduled for her debut performance at the renowned Berghain club, Jyoty, along with other internationally recognized artists, canceled appearances in Berlin. This collective decision led to the Berlin Senate retracting the controversial “anti-discrimination clause” for arts funding.

More than 1,000 figures across cultural sectors, including film, publishing, and music, expressed solidarity with Palestine, prompting a backlash. Renowned individuals like Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Charlotte Prodger, and Annie Ernaux, winners of the Turner and Nobel Prizes, joined the Strike Germany movement.

The contentious clause, introduced last month, mandated recipients of government arts funding to reject antisemitism as per the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition. This definition includes equating Israeli policy to Nazis and denying the State of Israel’s right to exist.

Jyoty’s withdrawal from Berlin’s dance music CTM festival is not her first political stance. She previously supported Indian farmers during their strike a few years ago. Beyond her role as a broadcaster and DJ, she has also worked for the UK Labour party after studying politics.

Euronews Culture interviewed Jyoty to understand the reasons behind her decision to withdraw from the 25-year-running CTM festival in Berlin.
