Belgorod, situated approximately 30 km (19 miles) from the Ukrainian border, has been a frequent target for Ukrainian forces since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago. In a previous attack in December, a drone and rocket strike claimed 25 lives and injured 100, marking the deadliest assault on Belgorod.
Recent events reveal that Russia launched 26 missiles at Ukraine, resulting in the death of a 66-year-old woman in Chuhuyiv near Kharkiv, along with several others wounded.
Simultaneously, the struggle for control over Ukraine’s eastern town of Avdiivka continues. Ukrainian soldiers, facing critical shortages of weapons and ammunition, express concerns that the town could fall at any moment.
NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg issued a warning on Thursday, emphasizing that the U.S. delay in approving continued military assistance to Ukraine is impacting the battlefield. Avdiivka holds strategic importance as it serves as a gateway to the Russian-seized city of Donetsk, remaining on the front line since the conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014.
