Understanding the Pakistan Election: Elections took place for 265 seats in Pakistan’s national assembly, with one seat postponed due to a candidate’s death. A simple majority of 133 seats is needed for a political party. To secure a simple majority out of the total 336 seats, including reserved slots for women and minorities, 169 seats are required.

Three major parties contested the polls: Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). PTI leaders ran as independent candidates due to the inability to use the party symbol—a cricket bat, as ruled by Pakistan’s Supreme Court and the Election Commission.
Who’s Leading the Pakistan Elections? According to Pakistani media Dawn, results for 245 out of the total 265 National Assembly constituencies were announced by late Friday. Independent candidates, mostly backed by Imran Khan, were leading with 99 seats. PML-N and PPP had secured 69 and 52 seats, respectively. These two parties were anticipated to win most of the 70 reserved seats for women and non-Muslims.

Who Will Form the New Pakistan Government? PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif claimed that his party emerged as the largest winning party in the country after the polls. Geo TV reported on Saturday that PML-N and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto agreed to form a coalition government in the Centre and Punjab, despite previous ruling alliances. PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan claimed that President Arif Alvi would invite PTI to form the government.
What’s Next for Imran Khan’s Party? Despite facing challenges, PTI, led by ex-PM Imran Khan, aims to form a national government as their backed independent candidates dominate the results.

Hurdles for PTI-Backed Independent Candidates: Despite leading in the polls, PTI faces significant challenges due to the Election Commission’s decision to remove the party’s ‘bat’ symbol, its candidates being technically independent, and legal issues against its top leadership, including Imran Khan.
Options for PTI-Backed Candidates:
Option 1: Independent candidates backed by PTI could join an existing party within three days of their victory, as per Rule 92(6) of election rules.
Option 2: They could support another political party.
Option 3: They may form a group with a name of their choice.
Option 4: If united and choosing to sit in opposition, they could secure the position of the opposition leader in the National Assembly.
The final outcome is yet to be seen as political enthusiasm remains high in Pakistan. A senior aide of ex-PM Imran Khan mentioned the possibility of peaceful protests if complete poll results are not announced by tonight.
